For me, 2016 was a busy year - a journey that has continued into 2017. I married the love of my life, I took on a new and challenging role at my work, and I decided to make some positive changes in my life. Part of that journey has involved overcoming some personal struggles that have plagued me for most of my life and that have left me feeling embattled emotionally, and have had a sometimes negative effect on my self-esteem and my relationships.
In trying to overcome some of these demons and improve my self-awareness, I decided to engage in activities that provided me with a sense of achievement and purpose. And one of those has been (gulp!) my commitment to start running, with the ultimate goal of running a half-marathon at the OMTOM in 2018. The other has been giving back to my community and volunteering for causes that are close to my heart.
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic provides low cost veterinary care to the pets of Khayelitsha, who provide love and companionship to some of the most impoverished members of our community.
I think it was Desmond Tutu (or maybe Madiba) that once said, to paraphrase, "that you can judge the health of a society by how they treat their animals". When we as humans have power over vulnerable creatures that depend wholly on the decision we make to either be kind or cruel to those in our care, the clinic sees both the very best, and the very worst, of human nature. They have just lost their biggest corporate donor and it is a very scary time for them. An entire community depends on the amazing work they do, unwaveringly, with very limited resources.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have entered my first 10km as part of my journey that began almost one year ago, and, to help provide some motivation and purpose, I wanted to take the opportunity to help Mdzananda with their mission, by raising R5000, or R500 per km.
