We’re excited to announce a significant new partnership between Mdzananda Animal Clinic and FOUR PAWS, aimed at vaccinating 1,000 community pets in Khayelitsha in honor of World Rabies Day, observed on September 28th. This initiative is a vital step in ensuring the health and safety of both pets and the community.

Protecting Our Furry Friends

Thanks to the generous funding from FOUR PAWS, the vaccination program includes 5-in-1 vaccinations, which safeguard pets from serious illnesses such as Parvovirus and Distemper. In addition, dewormers will be provided to enhance the overall health of Khayelitsha’s animals.

“We are honoured to receive this sponsorship from FOUR PAWS, which enables us to protect the animals of Khayelitsha and ensure essential primary health care,” said Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda. “Vaccinations are a vital component of safeguarding both pets and the community.”

Understanding Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans, and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, primarily via bites. Vaccinating pets is the most effective way to prevent the spread of rabies, which remains a critical public health concern.

World Rabies Day aims to raise awareness about this preventable disease and to promote rabies prevention efforts globally. “With the recent outbreak of rabies in Cape Town, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of keeping your pet vaccinations up to date. Unfortunately, this can be a costly endeavor for many. That is why we partnered with Mdzananda Animal Clinic to provide 1,000 additional 5-in-1 plus leptospirosis vaccinations to support rabies vaccinations from the Western Cape State Veterinarian,” said Fiona Miles, Director at FOUR PAWS. “By protecting our pets, we are also protecting ourselves and our communities.”

A Legacy of Care

As Mdzananda Animal Clinic celebrates 28 years of serving the Khayelitsha community this October, it continues to offer a wide range of services. These include consultations, a hospital, an operating theatre, ongoing sterilisation drives, an animal ambulance, mobile clinics, an inspectorate department, and a homeless shelter for animals in need. At the heart of its mission is the education of pet owners, empowering them to provide the best care for their pets and fostering a compassionate relationship between humans and animals.
